"Just Eat It"

As a class, we have spent time examining the make up of one’s Foodprint. We have explored the components of:
(1) How far our food travels
(2) How much our food costs
(3) How much of our food is wasted

Today we heard the story of Jen and Grant who decided to stop buying groceries for six months and lived off of “scraps'' to meet their daily nutritional needs. Throughout the documentary, they explore all aspects of a foodprint by looking at food production all the way from seed to table.

Your Task:
Based on our experience and discussions along our own food print journey as a class, create an in depth blog post about our findings. As you create your post, utilize information that we have collected from websites, class assignments and discussions. Be sure to be reflective by sharing your voice and original ideas on the issue. Structure your blog post as follows:

Introduction (Summary):
Summarize your findings as you explored the concepts of a foodprint: food miles, the cost of food and food waste. As we watched the film today, all of these elements come together throughout Jen and Grants journey.

Body (Response):
Based on our classroom activities, discussions and viewing of the film, what stood out to you the most? Share an in depth response to one of the following questions:
  1. What are some reasons we have so much food waste in Canada? As consumers, why do you think food waste often gets ignored?
  2. Why do we have expiry dates on our food? What is the difference between a ‘best before’ date and an ‘expiry’ date?

Conclusion (Action):
Ultimately, what can we take away from our experiences to put our learning into action? Consider ‘takeaways’ from the film, websites we have explored and discussions we have had as a class. Have conversations at home or conduct a small food audit and set an achievable goal for the future. For example, committing to take leftovers for lunch the next day or helping your parents create a shopping list could be small, but achievable steps that have a positive impact on your foodprint.

*Please have your blog completed and posted to your website by Tuesday, January 26th.*
